| "Sentinel of R'lyeh" | shed Moose antler carving, mounted on wooden plaque. The carving itself is 8 1/2 inches (21.5 cm) high, 5 inches at its widest. |

This sculpture was inspired by the "Cthulhu" mythos stories of H. P. Lovecraft. It is not meant to be a realistic representation of one of Lovecraft's eldritch beings, rather it is an original intuitive design that evolved from my long time fascination with weird tales and dark fantasy. Over the past decade I have created a number of fantastical sculptures in this series. I hope in the future to devote an entire gallery page to them. |

| The idea behind this sculpture is as follows. According to Lovecraft's stories, there is an ancient sunken city somewhere in the Pacific Ocean. This slumbering metropolis of the eldritch beings is called R'lyeh. The Old Ones, mad and malevolent gods from another dimension, sleep there and wait for the time to rise.... My sculpture depicts the aquatic Sentinel who lingers in the depths of the sea to watch over R'lyeh. At right is a digital art rendering of the statue, how it might look in the weird, otherworldly light of the ocean depths about the sunken city, at the gateway to Cthulhu's dimension. | |
